My first class in sewing school was learning to stitch a straight line. I first felt that I was doing some complicated dance move--holding the material, moving the circular motor, and pedaling at the same time. Once I got the hang of it, it was fun! After many lines--back and forth, back and forth--I had a tortured and tormented blue strip of fabric.
So now what. The sentimental fool that I am, I would like to keep this fabric.
Ok then. Maybe a hairband. I sewed (yes, sewed!) a snap button at the end, cut off all the excess threads, and here is my personalized creation. I suppose I could call it a FO.

Wear your hairband/scarf with pride! The first thing I sewed (well besides a skirt in 6th grade Home Ec) was a throw pillow which currently adorns my Katie's dog bed. :)
Sounds like a fruitful first class. What I meant before about teaching myself to sew? I bought a sewing machine last year and used online projects that had tutorials and basically just went at it. It really wasn't too hard to learn to sew on my own. I also took a quilting class at Purl Patchwork later to learn to quilt.
Cute! I like the orange and the blue together. We do get awfully attached to our "firsts", don;t we ;)
What a great post. Its good you are learning. For your information this style of straight stitches overlaping at times is becoming an bohemian type of machine quilting (well, not so many lines) but it is very stylistic so you could use this method with less lines and quilt a quilt and be very contemporary!!!
Thanks for visiting our blog. You've been doing some very wonderful things.
Great hairband!!! Love the colors:)
Oh Rima, I wish you were here! There's a woman in town who does both wearable and artpieces using the sewing machine. My daughter took one of her classes and had a fabulous time.
It is super cute as a headband! Put some elastic on the bottom, viola! I bet you could sell those for some bucks in NYC! :)
