Oh, how much I love babies. It feels like everyone around me is having a baby. I think I am having a small baby crafting sweatshop in my head. Babies, babies, babies.
I am all about top-down (it is another story of how petrified I am of seaming pieces together). Since so many of my friends are procreating, I have been on the hunt for good top-down crochet (I am faster with crochet) sweater patterns. Without much success, I soon started coming up with my own...Bombay Love is one of them.
Then I wanted a sweater that was versatile, that can be worn in many ways. Hey--babies are very fashionable. "Everyday is a New Sweater Day" was born. Button up and you have a funnel neck jacket. Roll up and you have a little pullover. Fold and you have a collared shirt!
This sweater was made for Anjali's baby! I made it in a 12 month baby size, but like all top-downs, it is all flexible (you got to love that). Work less rounds before separating the sleeves, and you have a smaller sweater. Remove the funnel neck and you have a plain sweater. Dont work on the sleeves after separation, and you have a little shirt. I am all about "making it your own."

Stuff:
* 1.5 skeins of worsted weight yarn; a little bit of worsted weight yarn in contrasting color for edging (I used Vanna's Choice Solids)
* size 5.5 crochet hook (fits 12 month old)
* two buttons and one yarn needle
Abbreviations:
* Ch: chain
* DC: double crochet
* SC: single crochet
* St: stitch
* DC-DEC: double crochet decrease
* Sl st: slip stitch
Body:
With the main color of your choice, Chain 38.
Row 1: DC in the 3rd ch from hook and in every ch across. Ch3, turn. Count this Ch3 as the first st in the next row and in every other row.
Row 2: DC in all other sts across. Ch3, turn.
Row 3 - 4: Repeat Row 2.
Row 5: DC in first 6 sts, (DC, Ch1, DC) in the next chain, DC in next 4 chs (first sleeve), (DC, Ch1, DC) in the next chain, DC in next 12 chs (back), (DC, Ch1, DC) in next chain, DC in next 4 chs (second sleeve), (DC, Ch1, DC) in next chain, DC in the next 6 chs (second front), Ch3, turn.
Row 6: * Work DC until Ch1 space, work (DC, Ch1, DC) in this space, repeat from * 3 more times, DC to end, Ch3, turn.
Repeat Row 6 until desired chest measurement. My shirts had a chest circumference of about 23 inches.
Next row: DC until Ch1 space, work DC-DEC in the first Ch1 space and the next Ch1 space (one sleeve separated), DC until next (third) Ch1 space, work DC-DEC in the third Ch1 space and the next (fourth) Ch1 space (second sleeve separated), DC to end, Ch3, turn.
Next row: DC in each st across, Ch3, turn. Repeat this row until you are two rows away from desired length (remember to end with WS row).
Next row: Change to contrasting color. DC in each st across, Ch3, turn.
Next row: DC in each st across. Fasten off.
Sleeves:
Attach main color yarn at Ch1 space at underarm, Ch2, work DC around, join to the second st of Ch2 with sl st.
Ch2, word DC around, join to the second st of Ch2 with st st. Repeat this row until desired sleeve length.
For edging: Attach contrasting color, Ch1, word SC around, join to Ch1 with sl st. Fasten off.
Repeat the same for the next sleeve.
Buttons: Sew buttons as shown in the pictures.
Finishing:
Weave in ends.
Smile.

I would love to make something like this for my toddler. Will you be trying to make larger conversions to this pattern in the future?
Oh, I can't wait to try out this pattern. Thanks much for posting it. It's adorable. I love it that you aren't into those traditional pink and blue baby colors. I have a hard time branching out but plan to with this pattern.
It's fabulous, Rima!
Loves it! Maybe I'll make one of these, too. In 12 month size and then Chloe will have something to wear next winter :)
That came out so beautifully well. I'm going to make one too!
such a cute and stylish sweater! I love the neckline on this and the red accent stripe at the bottom
holy moly, this is CUTE! Thank you for sharing!
ingenious!!!! Love the red trim :)
This is adorable as well. I need to try this one. The versatile collar is lovely.
What a fantastic sweater and with the different collar options it is a new sweater each time. Congratulations on another successful pattern!!!
wow...that looks nice. thank you for sharing your pattern.
Thank you for visiting my blog
That is really sweet - I have a friend who'll be having a baby late this summer. I may have to give your pattern a whirl!
Everyday SHOULD be new sweater day!! Love it!! I'm loving your patterns, I need to try to doing crochet.
You are really putting out the work! This is an adorable jacket... I love it! Another printed out crochet pattern I want to make. Thanks for being so generous with publishing your patterns!
I love this sweater, thank you for posting the pattern! I think I will try making it for my daughter :)
Cute!! Beautiful color combo, and great design :) Sounds like you have found a niche with these top-down crochet baby patterns - anything else in the works?
it is so : sweet!
love the combination of the colours.
Rima, just dropping by to tell you that I've just awarded you with... an award :D

I love the sweater, but I didn't feel I needed 6 pictures of it and I didn't need all the comments. Maybe you could put a printer friendly pattern so all we need to print is the pattern. Thank you Betty
Hi Betty -- You didnt leave your contact information, so I am leaving my response here. I am yet to make a PDF version of the pattern. For now, you can select the text you want, copy, and paste it into a Microsoft Word document. I hope this helps! Rima
I dearly love this pattern. I just finished one and linked to your site. If that is not ok let me know. I will tonight or in the morning put it up on ravelry. Thanks so much for sharing.
Back again its up on ravelry. My ravelry name is roofee (my nephew could not say aunt ruthie so its roofee). Oh yes, thanks for all the pictures you took of the sweater that was a real plus.
what a great sweater!
I love this pattern! It is the very first garment I have ever attempted. You've made it so easy! Is there anyway you could let us know how many rows etc it would take to make a newborn size? Thanks again. I am so happy that I was finally able to do something besides a scarf or afghan. Keep up the good work.
Hi Rima - I am almost done with this beautiful sweater for my boy! Thank you for sharing and making it so simple to follow. It is my first attempt in making something besides, scarfs, blankets and beanies. I want to thank you so much for sharing!
I like would gladly purchase a larger size pattern from you - say for a 10 year old.
I LOVE this sweater! It is extremely cute and just the right style for a baby. I too wondered if you will be writing down the pattern for slightly larger sizes - I'd love to know how to adapt it to a 2 year old toddler size.
Fantastic! I'll be queuing this on Ravelry for sure!
I love this sweater and the one below too. Nice job!
I have just finished making one of your gorgeous sweaters for my three year old. It is fabulous! I will send you a picture. Will also put one on my blog and link back to you if that is ok?
I just made one of these sweaters and a matching hat for my sister's own "Cupcake," although I did make it larger than what a newborn would wear (probably). I wish I could post a photo of it, to show it off! :) Thanks for such a cute pattern...I'll be checking your blog on a regular basis now for new patterns.
I have finished the first sweater, but instead of going round and round the sleeve I crocheted back and forth so that the sleeve matched the body. Going round and round produces a different pattern. I am also doing another and have increased the number of stitches to make a larger sweater. It seems to be working out. I have never adjusted a pattern before for a different size.
This might be a really dumb question, but I really want to make this sweater and am unsure of one thing in this pattern. In row one, when you say "Ch3, turn. Count this Ch3 as the first st in the next row and in every other row" do you literally mean every other row (2, 4, 6 etc.) or EACH row? I hope you understand my question. Then is the last stitch in each row made in the last actual dc or the third chain of turning?
Very nice pattern. Just made one for my friend's son. Never tried a top-down sweater pattern before. I love the ease of it. Thanks!
its a lovely pattern but I cannot understand row6. I made 3/4 attemts but the result looks nothing like the photo. can someone please help ?
I love it! Thank you for posting the pattern! I just finished one of my own and linked to your site. If that´s not ok please let me know. You can see the sweater here: http://ninnii.blogspot.com/2010/01/virkad-bebiskofta.html
Thanks for posting the pattern! Looking forward to trying it out!
I finally made this sweater and had a friend help me with the part with the sleeves. The part with the dc dec. I made it brown with bear buttons. I also made bear hat with ears to go with the sweater.
Rima, I would love to make something like this for my little one, it is just so beautiful work you have done.
does anyone know how big the sleeves are comparatively? I am trying to adapt this for a replica of a jacket and was wondering if the sleeves are the larger open sleeves or if they are more closely fitted.
please respond if you do know, so i can adapt the pattern if need be. thanks!
also, in response to the other comments, i'm sure that it may have already been answered, but:
when it says "Count this Ch3 as the first st in the next row and in every other row", i think it means, "skip the first stitch, as it will make your edges seem wonky if you ch3 and still dc into the first stitch". I already did that to row 8 or so, and i had to frog it all the way back to row 1.
and for row 6, it basically means, everytime you get to that first (DC, Ch1, DC), you repeat it in the space that was created.
I love this pattern, it is absolutely wonderful! I am fairly new with reading patterns and I am stuck on row 6. When it says to go into the next 4 ch stitches and then it says 1rst sleeve. I only have 1 ch between the 2 double crochets. Please clarify for me on this row.
Rima--
You have created a monster in me with your sweater pattern!! :) I just finished up another one for a friend with a tiny newborn!
Thanks so much for sharing your pattern! I've got a photo of the newest sweater online so you can see my latest take on it.

Thanks again! Love your creativity.

Hey Rima, I'm not a sophisticated crocheter at all -- I found your pattern and wanted to make something for a friend who's jumped on the procreation train -- I'm making it in a light yellow and am going to add a dark brown trim, hope it turns out as nice looking as yours! You have the cutest daughter, and I really like all the things you've made -- I'm going into a little yarn frenzy myself these days, and wanted an idea -- I have a 3.5oz skein of the softest teal-coloured yarn, and want an idea of what to make with it :)
Thanks for the lovely blog -- neha
I LOVE this little sweater and want to make it for my goddaughter. I've never made a sweater before, but was chugging along grandly until I got to the "chest circumference" bit after row 6. I know this sounds dumb, but does this mean go until the sweater is the right width (in this case, 18 inches)? Isn't this counting the shoulders as well? Help!
Thanks so much for the pattern!
love the pattern you have created. i was sent here to look at them from my sister who is now pregnant & wants me to make all sorts of things for her which i will gladly do!
just a suggestion in writing the pattern- if you could actually tell us how many rows you did to get the length/circumferance for things, that would be very helpful. also another symbol for dc-dec is dctog which literally means dc-together.
and for those who were getting confused with the 'ch3 counts as the first stich in each row', every time you ch3, its counting as a dc for that row. so if you were to ch3 then have 9 dc's after that, then the row should have 10 stiches. make sure if you are supposed to have that many that you are not putting a dc in the stich you just made the ch3 off of or it will bubble out the edges. the patterns will most likely tell you to put it in the joining stich or not, but if it doesnt then yuo shouldnt. hope that made sense & didnt confuse anyone more. =)
For those wanting to make a toddler size, this is what I did. Take care to follow exact instructions because it is very complex:
use a bulky yarn and a size 6 hook. ;)
i followed the pattern exactly and it fits my little girl a little snug, she wears a 3T. I left it a little snug because I think as she wears it, it will loosen up some. Hope that helps.
Thank you so much for making this pattern? I am a very beginner and I made this one and your bombay love sweater and LOVE them! :)
Hi, Can you clarify Row 6. I'm having trouble with it and have tried to do that row several times.
Does it mean to DC all the way until you get to the end of that row THEN do DC, CH1, DC ? OR am I supposed to DC, CH1, DC in the first stitch on that row and then just do DC all the way across?
Please someone help!
Row 6: * Work DC until Ch1 space, work (DC, Ch1, DC) in this space, repeat from * 3 more times, DC to end, Ch3, turn.
Repeat Row 6 until desired chest measurement. My shirts had a chest circumference of about 23 inches.
I am making this for my son and am totally in love with the look! But he is almost 3 and as I'm making this it's looking too small at the neck. Should I increase the first 38ch? But then how many dc across would I do as it would be different 6, 4, 12, 4, 6. Haha I hope I'm making sense? Thanks
Tia

Hi Rima, Thanks so much for your pattern ! It's lovely ! I did it, put on my blog and on ravelry... lways reporting the link to your blog!!! Thanks thanks thanks :D
I think this sweater is adoreable!!! But would like to make it in a newborn size. Does anyone know how to convert it to a smaller size???? Thank you!
Jen
Hi, I was wondering if you knew how to adapt the pattern to fit a large two year old.
I love this pattern, and have made a bunch of little sweaters (that have been donated all over). Thank you so much for contributing this pattern :)
Or, if anyone knows how many to chain for the start or the collar to accommodate a large two year old.
Thanks :)
I use this pattern all the time! Ever since the first I time I found it in late 2009, I've easily made 10-15 of these babies in a million different colors! And then today I was thinking "AHHH, I NEED A QUICK, BUT ADORABLE PATTERN!" and lo and behold, this pattern came to mind!
Hi, I'm trying to make this gorgeous sweater for my 1 year old daughter. Can u tell me roughly how many rows made the chest size required?
I don't know where to measure the sweater to get the chest measurements (1st attempt at something like this?)
