Its during these "under the weather" times that you remember some people. Like Grandma. Who turned 86 this month (my talented photographer-brother took this picture). Growing up, she gave me warm back rubs when I woke up in the middle of the night, and held my head when I threw up.
I suppose this is poor man's food, but Mai (aka Grandma) made the below concoction when we had a fever. We eat it with paiz (Konkani word for par-boiled rice in starchy water). "Eat" is the wrong word...you just stick your finger into the "juice" (all this is going to make a lot more sense once you read the recipe).
Meet-Mirsang (Konkani phrase for Salt-Chilli)
Statutory warning: Do NOT try this if your stomach lining is not used to spicy food.
One green chilli
One dried red chilli
A tiny ball of tamarind (enough to be smooshed into an teaspoon measure)
Salt to taste...and then another pinch (your tastebuds are usually dead when you are sick. My Grandma says sea salt tastes much better...)
Cut the chillis in half. Add all ingredients in a bowl. Add two teaspoons of water. Mash everything together. Done!
So, they say starchy, bland food is good for you when you have a fever. So eat this concoction’s LIQUID with some watery rice. Just for a little flavor. If it is too spicy, which it might be, add more water. If you need more salt, add more salt. Whatever your taste buds are calling for.
The truth of the matter is...I tried making it the other day. It worked, but really didnt taste like the way Grandma makes it. Well.

I am SO glad you are back. I have missed both your craftiness and great posts.
Email me your address. You can have the bag. It's UGLY!
A beautiful picture of your grandma. I hope you are feeling better.
Happy Birthday to your grandma! Wonderful photo too!
Yes, nothing is quite like the way grandma makes things. They have a special touch.
What a coincidence, I have been thinking of my grandmother too. It's so great that you have that recipe and who you'll comfort with it?
beautiful photo! Welcome back and I hope you're feeling better
Happy Birthday to grandma, she looks great and happy.
Thanks for leaving such a nice comment about the baby booties! And I agree, that is a beautiful photo of your grandmother. Feel better....
What a lovely photo of your Grandma. I can never seem to make things taste quite as good as my Grammy did, but I'm sure she'd love it that I try anyway, lol. I'll bet yours does too :)
Yes, I HAVE been wondering about you.
Thought you might have been busy.
I absolutely know what you're talking about; we call it "Porridge", which is a totally different thing to a "Western" porridge. [And "we", as in my family, and perhaps every other Asian Singaporean I know.] A Porridge is basically rice boiled in more water than needed (to make cooked rice). Isn't it? You can have it absolutely 'as is' with rice grains swimming in starchy water, or dressed up with ingredients of your choice, in your case, spices :)
I HOPE you are doing better Rima!
LOVE the picture of your grandma.
it never tastes the way grandma makes it.
x
That picture of your grandma is just soo sweet! If she were my granny, I'd have that framed and in my house :)
Welcome back! I love that picture of your grandma...
Feel better soon.
Nobody does it like Grandma!! I wonder if that would work for allergies...
What a beautiful smile your grandma has! Really lights up! I check your blog every day and thought maybe you were off in India again! I sure hope you are feeling better... its tough to not feel well and not be near your mom and dad...
I love that picture very much.
And hope you are feeling better!
Glad to see you back and that picture of your Grandma is just beautiful!
Hi Rima. I just discovered your blog today. I'm konkani too! Born and brought up in Bombay. Love paiz, especially with some crystallized lime pickle.
Lovely pic!
Mom makes meet mirsang similar way.. but adds freshly roasted garlic to it.. garlic and red chilly are roasted directly over the flame... :)
I love mit-mirsang with paiz! We used to defintely make it on Good Fridays or when mom used to not feel like cooking. Brought back lovely memories. Belated Birthday wishes to your grandmom.
Your grandmother sounds like an angel on earth looking after you so well. I miss my nana a lot, she has been gone for about 12 years now. She used to always look after us when we went to her house and tell funny jokes.
