Childhood
We had a small kiddie party for Anya a couple of weekends ago at her grandparents' home. It seemed like it had flooded kids. I am grateful for the opportunity--for me, having a child is a second chance at childhood.
I wanted the children to do something crafty (of course) at the party, so we picked painting. It was so much of fun--some of the adults joined in too. Ha. Some of the kids left their canvases behind...to be later put up in Anya's room.
I was determined to knit Anya a dress for the party. Actually, I wanted to make her something for Xmas. I casted on mid December--and panicked. Too little time, too much pressure. I dont work well under pressure. She wore a store bought dress for Xmas.
When the New Year began, I picked up the dress again. (Yes, I made it up the pattern, and no, unfortunately, I did not write it up as I went along). It was the first baby garment post-Anya. And it was exciting and unnerving at the same time. Exciting because I could keep trying it on her as I went along (she has no choice but get used to this kind of dress up). Unnerving because this had to be perfect. I mean, I could not make a garment that did not fit her--especially now that she was here (!) At one point, I just wished I could knit the dress ON her. (Again, it is time she gets used to these crazy ideas).
I am pleased with the outcome. It is a simple top down dress, with skirt increases at regular intervals on either side. I picked up stitches for the collar and button band. Hello Kitty buttons for pleasure. The yarn is a perfect fit--it has great stitch definition and feels real good in the hands. The dress fit Anya well--hopefully one day, she will look at her baby pictures, and notice that she is wearing a dress made by her mom. And hopefully that will get her curious about one, the obvious--about art, craft, and inspiration--and two, move beyond the obvious--what it means to create, evolve, challenge, and differ. That, in my mind, will complete the circle of my crafting.

I love the way you put it. I keep wondering how Ninad will turn out when he grows up and what he will 'become'. When I ask myself what I want him to be, the answer I always get is 'artist'. Any art - music, dance, knitting, sewing, painting, anything at all - but he should create something.
wow...that is awesome...
I love reading your blog Rima! Its so fresh! Lovely dress. hopefully Anya will model it and tell us how she felt :)
It's so cute! Any pics of her wearing the dress?
so simple and pretty! Looks gorgeous.
I love the art children make. I work at a preschool, so I get to see the cool stuff they come up with often. What great art Anya will have!
I love the dress, too. My girls love when they get to try something on that I am making them. They love knowing that I am making something just for them. I'm sure Anya will be thrilled to have her mom slaving away for her...
What a beautiful dress. I love those Hello Kitty buttons, they are too cute!
Oh I love it! The hello Kitty buttons are just the thing for it, too. Adorable. How do you come up with your patterns? speaking of your patterns, I hope you don't mind, I linked to your Bombay Love pattern on my blog (craftycoolcat.blogspot.com). If it bothers you, I will take it down, let me know.
where's anya....I was hoping to see her inside the dress...really pretty....I only keep thinking about making a dress for my little one......God knows when i'm gonna do that....
What a cute dress! Its beautiful. I am sure she will pick up this lovely talent and craft from you :)
I love kid art. Those paintings will look great in Anya's room. Also, it's amazing to me how you can just pick up needles and yarn and knit something without a pattern. :)
as i said earlier what a beautiful dress for Anya.
lovely party idea too.
i stumbled upon this yesterday.. for an idea to display the art work..

Hugs my friend :)
Well! How cute is that??! You did a fantastic job - it's just lovely. What a lucky little lady that Anya is!
beautiful! But really.. your beautiful creations are merely a reflection of your beautiful self. It was an honor to meet you today (-:
A painting party, how awesome is that! That dress is super sweet. Now we all want to see Anya in in, pretty please:):)
And with a blog, she can even figure out how to say it, if she can't find the words herself. It's beautiful!
Beautiful dress! Would like to see Anya model it!
ooh, anya is very lucky Rima...you are a great mom...what a great week!
Pretty pictures!
I just nominated you for an award over on my blog!
Cute dress, and very sweet that other children's art will decorate Anya's room!
SO many adorable knits!!! That anthro caplet has been in my queue for awhile as well, you've inspired me to bust it out sooner rather than later. And that elephant bib?! beyond!!!! I also second the writing-up-the-pattern for the dress :)
The baby dress is simply gorgeous!
You knit beautifully!
